There is presently no medication treatment for autism spectrum condition, and there is no cure. However, certain medications can assist with symptoms such as depression, seizures, sleeplessness, and difficulty concentrating. Medication is most helpful when coupled with behavioral treatments, according to studies.
The only medication authorized by the FDA for children with autism spectrum disorder is risperidone (Risperdal). It can be given to youngsters aged 5 to 16 years old to help them cope with irritability.
Other medicines, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), anti-anxiety meds, or stimulants, may be prescribed by some doctors in some situations, but they are not FDA-approved for autism spectrum disorder.
Getting Started
Consult your child’s doctor to see if there are any medications that can help with their symptoms.
Although nutritionists do not prescribe any special meals for children with autism spectrum condition, good nutrition is critical. Parents and children with ASD may reduce their food intake or try removing gluten to see if symptoms improve.
However, there is no evidence that eliminating gluten or casein (proteins found in wheat and milk products) from their diet helps with ASD, and restricting foods like dairy can hinder healthy bone growth.
Because children with autism spectrum disorder have weaker bones than children without the condition, bone-building nutrients are essential. To establish a healthy eating plan, you might wish to see a nutritionist or certified dietitian.
